XIPHOTEK

XIPHOTEK was a studio showcasing design & artwear, electronic music & noise, and architecture at 80 Spadina Ave. in Toronto in the early 1980s. It moved to a storefront space at 1040 Queen Street W. in 1986. It was generally open to the public on Saturdays when various artists exhibited, and had items for sale. The artists' collective included Martine Matthews, Alexandra Z, Doug Stone, Mariella Borello, Gerard Leckey, and William Weima.

In order to have an exhibition artists had to produce a letter of refusal from a grant council. Window space was available and on the opening day a punk band, GROUPOEM (Mr. Science) played the window! Holding up traffic is a good way to get attention. It also helps to have Abunchofuckingoofs come by and tie someone up outside.

XIPHOTEK as an artists collective was engaged in syndicated radio shows, fashion shows, and even a stint at The Conneseurs Showcase at the Toronto Metro Convention Centre, where their work was censored by Pepsi-Cola
.

XIPHOTEK "outrageous, witty, silly, sexy, funny, awkward and, well, Great."
Christopher Hume, Toronto Star, April 1985
